Newsletters Are Never A Bad Idea

One of my favorite projects is creating and developing newsletters with clients. Why do I find so much pleasure in this? Because we get to tell your ministry's story that invites others into the journey. With this simple communication tool you can begin to scratch the surface of how you are serving the people God has entrusted in your care, and invite others to join in the mission.

I don't get to work with each of my nonprofit clients as closely as I would love, but through their newsletters I get to help share with the world all of the amazing things they are doing. They are doing the ground-breaking work, pouring all that they have into the people they serve, and I get to help polish them like a pearl that only time will truly see its value. We work together to ensure their best foot is forward, and that it's evident through high-quality imagery, vibrant color themes, and balancing act between text and visuals.

For some, a newsletter might come best in the form of a weekly email. For others it's a monthly or quarterly printed mailing. Both are just as beneficial and can be incredibly helpful in expanding your ministry efforts. Depending on where you are in building your organization, or even what your ministries provide those you serve—digital vs. physical resources, ministries vs. events—might determine which route is best for you.

A client that I work with always includes the Road to Emmaus image on the front cover of their monthly newsletter. I couldn't think of a better way of describing what a newsletter is meant to do: It should provide an intimate moment to break open what was revealed, move our hearts, and discover where God is calling each of us by walking together in mission. Whether that means partnering with your nonprofit through financial support, physically as a volunteer, or spiritually in prayer, it's vital that your nonprofit begin—or continue—offering that first step for a potential partnership. It should be like Christ opening the Scriptures to us and saying, This is where you found me in the world. This is where I am abiding right here and now.

The only question I have left for you is: Are you ready for your first newsletter, or itching to get a new set of designer's eyes on an existing one? Put me in coach, I'm ready! I can't stress enough how much I LOVE bringing ministry highlights to the front and center, to draw others into mission with you. We can figure out what would work best for you, whether we go digital or physical, long or short form newsletters. Dare we do both?!

In the meantime, find those stories worth sharing. Make donating to your organization seamless and ready to handle both one-time and recurring donations. Have fun with a professional or impromptu mini photography session. Get others just as excited as you are for the good work you are doing by shining a light on all of those incredible things of yours, BLESS THE LORD (I'm already getting pumped up talking about it if you can't tell)!

The hardest part is always getting started on a new newsletter edition. We have to do the work now and pay close attention to anything we're doing to later reap the satisfaction of holding a printed, final copy. Note those memorable events. Find those whose lives have been impacted for the better. Seek out ways you can encourage others through written and visual communication. We have to now be more than present, we must be ready to record the words of others and joyfully share like the early disciples.

Would it be too much to say the New Testament is a series of newsletter editions? That's a thought for another day... 😊
