Silently Living a Happy Death

-ST. JOSEPH

How could someone with so few recorded words—none to be exact—speak volumes to the heart of the Church? Through his action and love. This doesn't mean that St. Joseph was a "yes dear" kind of husband that we see so often, or that he was a side character not worthy of a spotlight. He had a HUGE role in protecting the Holy Family from all of the outside forces and enemies who would rather see the Christ Child snuffed out. And he did so in silent obedience to Our Lord. He desired the Will of the Father so much that it would become his total identity. I mean, have you seen a list of his titles?

Joseph the Worker • Husband of Mary • Foster Father of Jesus • Patron of the Dying • Patron of the Universal Church • Illustrious Son of David • Splendor of Patriarchs • Chaste Protector of the Virgin • Mirror of Patience • Terror of Demons • Zealous Defender of Christ • Joseph Most Pure and Obedient

Although St. Joseph was most likely an imperfect man just like you and me, he allowed the Holy Spirit to guide his very actions as the Foster Father of Christ. He walked with the Savior of the World from conception until his own death—which we also don't know when that was. He stepped out of the way, dying to self, so that the world could know its Salvation, the greatest love story God could've ever orchestrated! And God needed Joseph who was willing to set aside his own agenda and walk the path he was made for.

Just as I mentioned before, no one really knows when or how Joseph passed away, but I couldn't imagine a more perfect reunion with Our Lord than being surrounded by the Blessed Virgin and Christ in his final moments on earth. What a beautiful vision of everlasting joy! Words would ALWAYS fall short if that was what my life had been preparing me for!

I pray that we too may all follow St. Joseph's example and obediently seek the Will of the Father, protecting and defending Christ in our hearts until our final breath, and that we may slowly learn how to silently live our own happy deaths to welcome new LIFE!

St. Joseph, pray for us!
