What Do I Really Want?

A consistent assumption that's been thrown at me is that I have a natural talent for enticing people to purchase my organization's services, or that I know how to work the perfect TikTok algorithm to draw in the biggest numbers. Heck, sometimes it's even assumed my body copy—any of the words you see in an advertisement, article blog, street sign, you name it—will be flawlessly worded and grammar-free 100% of the time!
I worked two communication roles after college, but I quickly found myself avoiding the weekly update posts so that I could get a head start on the church newsletter. While the assumptions of my marketing skills are all good to know about, it's just not what I love about design, or even CARE about on most given days. I'm not good at promoting myself. I'm not good at convincing people I'm better than my other design friends I know. I started writing these blogs because I don't want to deal with the hassle of social media posting! Not because I'm lazy, it's just because I only want to design!
"I make things look pretty" is my common summarization of what I do for a living. It might seem like a fun, girly thing to say to get a chuckle in, but it's true! When someone gives me a design they've been working on and need input, I looooove making the columns line up or giving it the hierarchy they didn't know was missing. Slapping in a high-quality photo instead of the selfie they thought got the point across. The truth is, I actually do just love making things look appealing to the eye, giving it dimension to draw the viewer in from different angles without being overwhelmed or left desiring more.
And I believe that if you can't afford a designer, YOU DESERVE A DESIGNER! That might be the only thing left you need to make your ministry stand out in a crowded room. Don't assume you have to spotlight the amazing things you're doing with a cut-and-pasted, rescanned poster that you use from year to year. In a day and age where the attention span is 2 minutes max (I can be guilty of it myself!), visuals can make a world of a difference when you are trying to get their attention.
My dream isn't to be a millionaire by the end of the day, but rather to empower those who don't know what they are missing out on. If you have the dream, I can help make it a reality! That is what I love doing. I design to capture their attention so that you can minister to their hearts. I'll do what I love so that you can continue doing what you love. Besides, we're both in it for the ultimate goal at the end of the day: God's BEAUTIFUL love story.
